68 - Samples Suitable for Spectrometer Ref
Research Projects
Abstract:
Reference Materials (RMs), including Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), for Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) in iron foundries help ensure proper calibration and consistent results of the chemical testing over time. For internal uses, such as drift correction, check standards, or type standards, it is desirable to have materials that are close in composition to production castings.
Samples were produced using 3D printed molds on a cast iron chill block. Chill tendency of the irons poured was evaluated using Wedge and Chill tests from ASTM A367. Homogeneity of the samples produced was evaluated using techniques defined by ASTM E826.
The study concludes that foundries can produce in-house RMs of sufficient quality for internal use by controlling chill conditions, mold design, heat treatment, and chemical composition. These findings provide a reproducible method for creating cost-effective and composition-specific RMs suitable for routine control and process monitoring of OES Spectrometers
